About Us

International

You probably take for granted the right to access this website, to meet and discuss work problems or politics. But trade unionists in many other countries risk intimidation and even death for active membership in a union. Solidarity - joining together with others who share a common interest - is the very basis of trade unionism, and it shouldn't stop at national borders.

Britain's economy and political system are interdependent with Europe and the rest of the world. It is vital, therefore, that UNISON works with sister trade unions in other countries and through key international organisations to promote and protect its members' interests and concerns.

The North West Regional International Committee meets at least 3 times a year.  The committee overseas the regions international work.  In recent years the region has been actively working with solidarity organisations on many projects for example:

  • The NW Region will be part of a high profile delegation to Southern Africa in 2009.  This has been organised in conjunction with ACTSA
    www.actsa.org

  • The Middle East remains an important part of our work.  We work closely with the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign.

  • Ver di
UNISON and Ver di two unions, whose members are largely recruited from the public service providers, believe that they have a great deal in common and that by working more closely together they can considerably enhance the conditions of workers in both the private and public sector.

  • Community H.E.A.R.T. (Health Education And Reconstruction Training) is a UK based Registered Charity, set up to overcome the awful legacy of apartheid South Africa. Together with their partners in South Africa they give priority to health, education and reconstruction training projects based on the principle of self-help. www.community-heart.org.uk

  • UNISON NW & University of Liverpool Collaborative Research Project

Since October 2006 UNISON NW and the University of Liverpool have been involved in a four year PhD collaborative project exploring UNISON NW membership and branch perspectives on labour internationalism and international development activity.

The aim of the research is to provide UNISON with a unique insight into how its members engage with trade union activity in the international context.

The PhD student conducting the research, Becky Ryland, would like to thank all of the branches and members across the North West region that have participated so far in interviews and focus groups to produce a mass of interesting information. Those of you that would be interested in taking part please contact Becky with any queries:

In January 2011 Becky was appointed as an area organiser in the North West and can now be contacted by email at: [email protected] Tel: 0161 661 6779.

Initial findings from the research can be found by following this link... See also a copy of Masters Research Dissertation exploring these issues in depth.
