UNISON Northwest - Equality

UNISON’s membership is made up of individuals from all walks of life and all parts of the world. Everyone if these individual are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect at all times.

Equality is about providing opportunities for all regardless of race colour, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, mental or physical disability etc…..basically everything.

UNISON North West recognises that equality is a core trade union principle – we actively campaign for equality of opportunity in the workplace and in the wider community.

UNISON is the UK’s biggest public sector trade union and is proud of its record in winning equality, but we are not complacent – we will continue to promote equality and campaign to eliminate discrimination wherever it rears its ugly head.

We are committed to achieving equality throughout its structures and in 2007 we appointed our first Regional Equalities Officer, to implement the regions Equality Strategy (will scan so that you can set up a link!!) and drive the equality agenda forward in a coordinated approach. Working with branches and Self Organised Groups (SOGs), Dion Baugh will:

provide advice, support, representation and development, not only to branches, but also to staff
audit and monitor equality activity across the region
achieve greater participation of members from the under-represented groups
ensure the bargaining agenda regionally and at branch level reflect the needs, concerns and aspirations of all UNISON members

Self Organisation is an opportunity for members to get involved in their wider union, develop skills and build confidence. The Region has the following groups:

If your branch would like to set up a SOG the Regional Equalities Officer would be happy to assist but initially you may want to download a copy of UNISON Guidelines on Self Organisation.

The Regional Equality officer also works closely with Branch Equality Officers and there is a Forum available for them to attend 3 times a year where they are able to discuss the union’s equality agenda, exchange good practice and listen to a range of informative speakers.
