The City's Biggest Trade Union Urges High Turnout in Euro Elections to Stop the Racist BNP

Event (leafleting) Albert Square, Manchester 12.00 - 14.00 Friday 15 May.

UNSON Manchester, the city's biggest trade union, representing members including Council employees, School and College support staff and Housing and Voluntary and Community workers across the City is urging its 11,000 members to help mobilize the vote in the forthcoming European election on 4 June to ensure the racist BNP do not get a seat.

Branch Secretary of UNISON Manchester, Tony Caffery said, "The best way to stop the racist BNP leader, Nick Griffin, in his attempt to become a Euro MP for the North West and claim hundreds of thousand pounds in expenses is to cast your vote for anyone other than the facists in the coming elections. But it's important that everyone uses their vote, as the higher the turnout, the less likely it is that the BNP will secure one of the Euro MEP seats."

"They claim they are the party that supports the ordinary worker; but all trade unions utterly reject the BNP's vile politics of hate. That's why trade unions across the county have been campaigning against the BNP, urging their members to spread the message that the BNP have none of the solutions to today's pressing problems, but if elected they will surely bring with them a whole load of extra problems, like spreading hate and division throughout our communities. We are delighted that there is cross party support for the Trade Union Friday initiative and look forward to seeing as many politicians as possible on the 15th May."

Assistant Branch Secretary, Rena Wood added, "There is no room in a civilized society for an extremist right wing organization like the BNP. On the surface they appear as respectable politicians, but their views on women on Lesbian & Gay communities and Black British people are as disgusting as ever. Beneath their suits, their trademark racist, sexist & homophobic views are the same as ever."

The UNISON Manchester Branch has long supported the Hope not Hate campaign which works with trade unions from across the country to combat the BNP. Many members and activists will be helping mobilise the vote and leafleting across Greater Manchester.
