Music, dance, art, film, workshops and family events; the Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival is bursting with the sounds, colours and sights of the Arab world.

Pop in to the Bluecoat in the heart of Liverpool on Saturday 3 July 2010 for the ever-popular free Family Day, with, music, dance and storytelling for all ages. Meanwhile musical highlights for this year include a rare appearance from Egyptian pop superstar Mohamed Mounir at the Philharmonic Hall, and Iraqi singer Farida and her band at the Bluecoat.

And if you like nothing better than settling down with a good film, there’s a great range on offer including the first Palestinian animation Fatenah, and the gently humorous feature-length Amreeka, following an immigrant’s experiences in the “promised land” of small-town America.

Literary Event

Friday 13 August between 12 and 2 pm

Palestinian Walks by Raja Shehadeh

(Free Copy to UNISON members)

The North West Region has purchased a number of copies of Palestinian Walks by the lawyer and peace activist Raja Shehadeh. Copies of the book are free to UNISON members (subject to availability).

Raja has lived in Ramallah on the West Bank since 1948, during which over a million Palestinians have been displaced. In Palestinian Walks Raja ties the beauty he sees in his disappearing homeland to the crumbling of his dreams for a legal solution to the Israeli occupation.

Members who request a copy of the book will later be invited to attend a literary event on Friday 13 August between 12 and 2 pm at the Bluecoat Centre to discuss their reaction to the book and how it made them feel. The event will include guest speakers and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

If you wish to receive a copy of the book, please contact Victoria Walton at UNISON North West Regional Office, (v.walton@unison.co.uk or 0161 661 6716) with your relevant details, including name, address and membership number.
